Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education announces Masters in Education with International Specialization

RIVERSIDE, CA (May 25, 2010) – California Baptist University (CBU) has announced a new Master of Science in Education with International Specialization degree whose courses will start in September 2010.

The new M.S. in Education at CBU features a concentration in international studies, which will be particularly attractive to educators who want to teach in private or Christian International Schools, according to Joe DeVol, Assistant Professor of Education. Both DeVol and Dr. Rachel Timmons, Professor of Education, have been integral in the formation of the new program at CBU.

“CBU’s new M.S. in Education-International Specialization will help build the awareness, understanding, and skills necessary for effective teaching overseas,” DeVol said. Program leaders have made preliminary connections at 20 schools in 16 countries.

According to Timmons, who has herself spent many years teaching overseas, the teaching opportunities for those who are willing to live abroad are plentiful and accessible.

“Western educators, in particular, are in demand,” Timmons said. “Parents in other countries are seeking American educations for their children, and the California teaching credential can open the door for teaching in many schools overseas. Students can earn an income while earning the master’s degree.”

Dr. Mary Crist, dean of the Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education which offers the new master’s, said that would-be school teachers should not think of themselves as bound by local opportunities in light of the state’s continued financial woes.

“If you can’t find a teaching position locally, think globally,” Crist said. “The world is really your classroom. If you want to teach, God has a place for you.”
